Oh my God..! These events are awful..! How anyone can treat other human beings like this is beyond my comprehension and fills me with great sadness for these poor souls that reside in nightmare realities such as you’ve highlighted here…
I sincerely hope that change can be brought about by people such as yourself.. who highlight and bring awarerness to others through dedication and caring.. the knowledge about the plights of these souls and how the perpertrators of these horrendous actions actually get away with it yet again because of corrupt people who sit in positions of power….

This is the most important blog/site on the internet! We must get governments to react! We hear of horror stories in the Middle East, but nothing happening there can top these horror stories. The entire world needs to react with the outrage needed to stop this. What is the Indian government doing to stop this kind of killings? INDIA! Your women are your most important assets! STOP MURDERING THEM! The entire world knows now. The Indian governments should make this their top priority!

    • December 12, 2012 5:24 pm

Jean — you are absolutely right! This is exactly what we are saying. That the sort of horror stories that one hears in India on a daily basis is far worse than what is actually happening in many countries in the Mid-East. So we too are puzzled why many people in the west who feel very angry about misogyny in ‘Muslim’ countries are so much more tolerant when it comes to this scale of violence in India which is much worse, and almost ‘normalized’ the way it happens every where, every day.

Very well put. It’s incredible to us that these crimes can be happening at all, let alone daily. The Indian government has had women in high office for many years, so it does realise that women have a valuable place in society. Yet so many politicians have rape or other sexual assault charges against themselves, they’re therefore unlikely to try to stigmatise rapists rather than the victims. The 1st step seems to me to have anyone with a history of sexual crimes to be forced to leave office. The 2nd is for other countries to declare their feelings on the abuse of women, with the threat of trade sanctions (which I know is not an ideal step as often the workers suffer the most from these steps), if the problem starts to hurt the economy they may be forced to take action. Although they may just ensure fewer cases are made public and close down movements which give publicity to the problem. Money is clearly more important to India than her women. Any countries greatest asset is it’s people, so to deny human dignity to 50% of the population beggars belief.
India’s women are strong, they fight inequality every day with dignity, they tolerate humiliating breaches of their human rights, because they’ve been brought up to believe they are inferior.
Yet every leader the country has ever had; it’s most esteemed Doctors, Scientists, Human Rights activists, those who fought for democracy, everyone; they ALL had mothers/sisters/daughters/ even governess’, they relied on women for their nurture, and to give themselves entirely to ensure their well-being when they were children and infants.
This is how a country repays those who should be of equal importance as any male citizen, instead every day suffers simply because many of the men are weak. They blame women for their own rape, rather than acknowledge the rape is their fault entirely for not being able to avoid temptation, and not being strong enough to behave in a civilised manner. As long as the leaders, political and religious, refuse to admit there is a problem, far less address it, then they too are just as guilty, if not more so due to their positions, as the perpetrators.
God help India, a country in denial and real human crisis.

These Crimes are Horrendous, and the Government just turn a blind eye ! The protesters were only trying to put their point across that enough is enough, in my view the Police were the ones that turned a peaceful protest into one of carnage, with their batons and water cannons !! I think the Government need to be made accountable for all the Atrocities that are happening in the Country !! I can imagine the fear that the women and children are suffering on a daily basis

It is incomprehensible that the country of Mahatma Ghandi can still be carrying out these terrible acts of cruelty against it’s women and girls!! The rest of the world must not keep quiet and must do whatever it takes to force the Indian government and it’s inept and corrupt officials to put a stop to these barbaric acts. What will India do when there are no women left?? My heart goes out to all women and girls in India and I pray that their plight will be recognised and ended soon.

I am shocked and outraged by the above titles and was unaware of the goings-on of the disgusting treatment of girls and women in general. How is that possible when we had a woman prime minister in the 70s that women are treated with so much contempt and disregard and that in a country that has bollywood beauties also treat their other sisters brutally. This is totally unacceptable.

What is surprising is the women who are the upper class. The ones with power. The ones in office. Do they have daughters? What if this was one of their daughters ? What would their reaction be as a mother. Life is important. Whether male or female. Delete one or the other you delete that race. Mothers stand up fight back not only for you but your daughters. Mothers fight for their young

@Linda — Once women are in political office in India, they only view the masses as a male vote bank. So they don’t want to do anything to displease men! It’s the first time in Indian history that Indian women are demanding their rights as individual citizens, that’s what’s taken the administration by surprise. They are stunned.

Why is this happening now in India? What has changed? It used to be safe to go about India as a woman and there has never yet been such news except about the common dowery killings?Woman of certain casts seemed reeled with power, respect from their community. What is the phenomenon? Is it the new access to the abusive media and pornography about woman? Is their a backlash against a particulair mouvent of emmancipation for woman?

    • December 29, 2012 6:28 pm

@Herts– With education, more women go out, to colleges, universities, jobs. No India was never safer for women. Even before, women hardly ventured out. Even now, you will see far more men than women in any public place. It is the freedom and independence of women that is unacceptable to men. Also, earlier it was always made out to be the woman’s problem. She asked for it. And younger generation of women in India are no longer willing to accept that. This is the start of a revolution that has been long in the coming.

The people of India want the government to change and protect the women of the country which is much easier to talk about than do, unfortunately. Perhaps these petitions from outsiders will help enforce the issue because no one likes to be seen as evil away from home. Pressure from inside the state and outside the state might be needed here!

I strongly demanding from the government of India to pass a strong law to stop all crimes against girls/women of India. Our laws are not strong enough to protect the women either on streets or at home. Our society is giving extra encouragement to the man to look at a woman in different way not as a human being apart from this there is lots of traditions & customs prevailing in Indian society which dominates women in every field of life. In brief WE DEMAND THE MINIMUM PUNISHMENT FOR A “RAPIST” IS TO BE HANGED BY NECK and the government should take strong steps to general atrocities women are facing in their daily lives.

Waiting for the government to pass some law which then has to be enforced in a corrupt environment is like waiting for oranges to fall off an apple tree! So the people must act. What is the female population in India? Make use of that power house of persuasion and see what miracles can happen. Don’t rely on corrupt politicians, female or male. Women must act to protect women.

I never knew there was a problem of such magnitude in India. I am so sad that poor young woman was so savagely brutalized that it caused her death. Those excuses for human better be punished as well as the bus driver. Who knows what she may have contributed to the world? I don’t understand how the female leaders in India aren’t fuming about the treatment of their sisters and why aren’t they doing anything about it?

    • December 29, 2012 8:15 pm

@Janet — Female politicians generally are interested only in retaining their seats, and so far the electorate voice has been male — for men, by men. Women have to raise their voices like they have over the last 2 weeks, and demand accountability from the government. We have to fight for our rights as citizens and we hope this is a movement that will carry forth.

  18. December 29, 2012 7:11 pm

alas…alas….this horrendous blight……India’s education system needs to go back to the drawing board….biology lessons should be made essential and necessary before marriage and to prospective mother and father in laws all around….more women need to be elected into the Lok Sabha and made prominent and obvious to the macho culture which is answerable to this misogyny.

I am sure present government of Delhi forgot when youth rises and takes up arms against evil, they do not care for their lifes, well beings or comforts. This have been proved umpteen times at the time of India’s indipendence fight. Usually, youth of any country are quite laid back and do not try and meddle in day to days politics. But they do keep a vigil on what’s taking palce in and to their country. Just by water cannons, Lathis, or for that matter Bayonets also can never bring any youth mevement or out burst under control. when they move in mass they really have the power to swipe what ever stands in their path. Same thing did take place in Chittagong, where kids of 13~14 years fought against mighty British Lion. Look what that did to British. So, the act of Delhi poilce using eater cannon, tear gases and Lathi could not detter the demos. Neither could they put any dent to their determinations. It was the Law machine who should be squarely ostrasized and made to bear the burden of starting such a fight, where poor Constable lost his life for no fault of his. So, rulers and law makers, please do take heed of this and be aware of youth strength. Do not try and curb any movements in such manner, wher you are bound to get hurt and spell disastor.

This story does not say much for the male gender, does it? The male half of the human race is going to have to stop all the other so-called “men” from doing stupid stuff like this. This timid,
cowardly behavior is not befitting any real man. A real man doesn’t need to beat, rape or keep imprisoned any female to take care of them or to feel manly.

When I lived in India 50 years ago, rape was unheard of. I feel sure some Dalit women were raped by higher castes and there were secret dowry deaths and infanticides. There was no equality but protection of women were important. However now with more Indian women getting education and competing with men for jobs, the macho culture of India cannot cope with it any longer. The saucy half-clothed Bollywood female images do not help the cause of women either. These gangrapes are Indian males’ reply to women’s relative emancipation in India. Women have a long way to go.in order to achieve equality but Indian men cannot even adjust to this little advancement.of Indian women. We need a far stronger Ministry of Equality and plenty of anti-sexist training of the Indian police forces, administrators and politicians. Otherwise India will fail to be a democratic country for half of its own population and lose all its tourism potential from abroad through all the adverse publicity. Is that a future we want for the second most populous country of the world which has tradition of prominent women even in the ancient times?.I am ashamed as an Indian male!

We hate children in this country more than any other place in the world The problem is that adults are in denial of that feeling in themselves. They like to think they are good people who love children but they dont really or we would not have the rate of crime against children we have in the USA Lets get honest! Men will always be men, in any culture or country. David Hall is quite wrong. There is no shortage of rapes in the West. Women complain here about the same police conviction rates on rape cases. What we need is plenty of antisexist training for men in every country so that the age old outlook of men can be changed slowly for good. This will take time. May be UN Human Rights Watch should take a lead on this. Ministers of Equality in each country can also monitor the progress on ths matter..

I agree. We have rape sexual abuse of children and other violence against boys girls men and women right here in the USA. Women are raping boys and girls. Men are raping boys and girls and other men and women. Lets be honest we have not changed much but we are little by little. Sexism is a serious problem. The men in my family are aware and struggling to change with very little help from other men. My 11 year old grandson is one of the lucky ones. He will learn to be a real man by example. His father and grandfather are working hard to change the cycle of violence against women. It’s not easy but it can be done. Dear Linda

As I have already said, sexism, sexual harassment and sexual murders are the problems of the whole world. It is not restricted to india but we always have to fight it wherever we see it. Otherwise the world will remain in a relatively dark age and democracy in truest sense of the term will be meaningless. Women the world over must cease being second class citizens!

Thank you Samir for responding. You are so kind. But you seem to know very little about the problems in the USA. And you generalize about men which is unfair to men. I know more men than women I would trust my daughters and grandchildren with. I would like to add that men are raised by women and it is the women that need to change! My husband is Irish and it is believed that many Irish mothers tend to raise violent/hateful cold indifferent children. thank GOD my husband rejected his mother’s hateful philosophy of life and is the only sane person in his family of origin. I am a counselor and it is the women who teach girls to be victims of abuse and they allow men and boys and lesbians to abuse their own daughters. Female teachers and counselors allowing in the schools the girls to be sexually harassed and raped by males and lesbians. USA adult women think its funny and wonderful to have a play in which a woman/lesbian rapes a 13 year old girl. See this play called The “Vagina Monologues”. I am working with an adult woman who was raped when 19 years old by her female “friend” and her husband. it is female adults and girls who look the other way when when girls are being bullied in school. Did you know that female doctors and mother are violating the law daily in the USA and forcing their daughters to have abortions against their will? Well it is true. I am their counselor after the abortion when they come to me suicidal and not “not knowing” who they are any more. That is what women are doing to girls! Not all men are abusers or rapists nor will they become abusers or rapists. And not all women are protecting their daughters. So to say “Men will always be men, in any culture or country” is not true and very generalized. It is insulting. Men are changing and have been changing for years. It is the women who need to change! I have stories that would turn your stomach about women and girls abusing women and girls. Let’s get real and hold everyone accountable!

Young boys are told they have nothing to say about their unborn child and suffer with depression and suicide. There is female Gendercide in the USA. Gay Women and gay girls, gay men and gay boys are being raped and or murdered in the USA and around the world. Women and men are doing this to each other!! Let’s fight back around the world. I also published a newsletter depicting the unsafe conditions in our small town.Today the kids have a renovated rec center and we are all safer.

    • January 15, 2013 12:28 pm

@Linda — It is true that women are one group of humans that are subjected to violence no matter which country you go to. But when we say genocidal violence we mean a killing on a genocidal scale. Most countries of the world including the US have a ‘normal’ gender ratio — which is 105 females to 100 males. But in India in 20 years there will be 20% less females than males because 20% of women have been eliminated: that is 50 million females eliminated in 3 generations. In Europe there were 6 million Jews eliminated — to give you an idea of the scale. We are saying this is beyond the kind of violence women face. It is a hate driven violent extermination of group: Please click here on our news paper log to understand what we are talking about. Also here is a brief 10 minute video that gives the full picture of the genocidal violence on women in India. Please see it.

  38. January 16, 2013 1:12 am

Yes. This is appropriate. I also felt Linda was widening the debate to USA and their males. The current struggle is for Indian females–their infanticide, dowry deaths, sexual harassment, rapes and rape injstices and murders. Of course all countries have their problems. So have Gays. But can we deal with one problem at a time please? They are enormous on their own!

    • January 18, 2013 11:23 pm

I agree. This site is the best but it is addressing the problems in India, not the USA or other countries. There are plenty of problems to go around as I’ve found that in nearly every country women have to fight certain battles, but this is urgent for India and we should all concentrate on this country and the women there. Seems it is a crisis against females in India and we should all join in and do what we can. I hope I can become more involved soon.

Enough talk of punishment and retribution. Educating everyone from an early age in relationship must be the way through these archaic and terrible attitudes and actions

  41. February 2, 2013 3:26 am

Yes. But education is a longterm process. Side by side we have to promote new laws against sexual harassment and assaults and heavily punish the perpetrators of such crimes. We have to follow that with prolonged antisexist training at all levels in education, work, employment and leisure services.

of course we must do all we can to prevent these atrocities but we must also learn how to use our voices in such a way that we are most likely to be heard.

Yes Roe. It is a global problem-a global war for equality. There is a glass ceiling against women in the West as well.

HOW MUCH IS BOLYWOOD TO BLAME FOR THE RAPES IN INDIA

A huge share of the blame for the massive increase in rapes all over India should be put on Bollywood and the type of movies they have made over the last two decades. Most of these movies depict women in a very poor light. The hero could be a mechanic or a rickshaw driver but he will have a group of goonies with him and they stand around passing crude comments at women. The hero behaves in a rough and crude manner with a girl who may be educated and from a respectable family but this means nothing to the hero who forces himself on the girl with crude gestures & song and eventually wins over the girl. This is the myth propagated by Bollywood and it has resulted in a huge change in the way the uneducated men view women today.

If you look at the behavior of heroes in older movies it was much most respectful towards women and so was society in the old days. Granted that fantasy was always a part of films but the hero wooed the heroine with tenderness & respect in the old days. Even in movies like Amar Prem where the herione was a prostitute she was treated with respect. Womanhood was cherished as the font of all life. Motherhood was revered as the greatest sacrifice and women in general were given their due. The hero would never mistreat a woman and that role was clearly defined for “the Villain” who would then be severly punished for even daring to insult a woman.
In Bollywood today women have mostly been reduced to the status of accessories who dress up in skimpy clothing to perform lewd dances with sexually-suggestive gestures. They are subjected to crude behavior by men on the street and while they don’t respond to the crudity they are potrayed as secretly enjoying the attention! So now every Roadside Romeo who is jobless thinks he has licence to act in a lewd manner with women and make crude suggestions and she will eventually succumb to his “charms”. And even if she resists his advances she probably secretly likes them!

Case in point is the gruesome rape in Delhi recently – the victim a student aspiring to become a doctor. The rapists- a bus drive & helper/cleaner, a sweeper, a fruit seller, a gym helper, etc. But for them she was nothing but an object on whom to vent their frustrations and anger.

So does Art imitate life or is it Life imitating Art? Either way Bollywood has to stand up and change its approach or all this anger and grief they are showing is just hypocrisy and crocodile tears!

If they really feel anything for this poor victim in Delhi or indeed the thousands of girls who have become victims of savage and bestial crimes then they need to put their money where their mouth is and stop potraying women disrespectfully. They need to convey the message to the millions of uneducated potential Romeos that the punishment of misbehaving with women will result in terrifying punishment and invite the wrath of God on them anf their families.

So do they care for women or for their box office returns?

So come on Bollywood – show us how much you care and for what you care!

Amen to that, brother! Perfectly explains the mentality of the cheapstakes who infest every street in the city.
So good to read your comment, and know that there are civilized, sensible, humane people who like cleanliness & decency.
Thankfully my mother never allowed me to watch any movies or TV junk since my childhood. But in spite of that, I very clearly knew what goes on in any movie – you don’t have to watch an Indian movie to know what would be in it. All I had seen was a few parts of a few movies when we go to visit our friends/neighbors & they have their TV running, or when we are in waiting rooms/receptions and some movie is being played. And I had read a few reviews/critics of some movies that come out in newspaper. That was enough for me to get the whole picture of the entire industry – sell the same repulsive story – just change the names, faces & backgrounds a lil bit.
The worst part is that this pathetic industry is raking up so much money – no other industry on the face of the earth can make so much profit with just one single product (same story, same stupid dance etc) without making any real change to the product for so many decades.
The most dangerous part is what you have pointed out, and what women are experiencing everyday on the streets.

Congratulations Akil! I have been awaiting an email like this for a long time. Someone has the guts to dare criticise the popular, huge money-spinning Bollywood industry. I have been concerned about this lewd aspect of Bollywood for decades although I loved the Bollywood songs. Based usually on a very weak plot, driven by its pathetic search for fantasy and glamour punctuated by nice songs and titillating sexy dances and occasional fights, Bollywood industry has a lot to answer for the current depreciation of the image of Mother India. Bollywood has provided such an escape valve for the frustrated poverty-driven Indian working class that a decent woman’s body and soul mean nothing to them any more. It is up for any game! While huge sums of money are made by these films and their actors (If you need any real acting talent at all for these films), the highbrowed morality of Old India with birthplaces of so many religions) goes into a death spiral. Gang rapes, paedophilia, dowry murder, honour-killing are mere examples of this Indian moral decline driven by Bollywood. Come on Bollywood, clean up your act before India becomes a topic of jokes abroad and India loses all the foreign exchange from foreign tourism!
