Lower Caste Teenage Girl Gang Raped by 12 Upper Caste Men

October 6, 2012

Sept 09, 2012, Hisar, Haryana

A 16-year-old Dalit (lower caste) girl was gang-raped by 12 men from the Jat (the upper caste) community. The men videoed the rape and circulated it on their mobiles.   When the girl confided what had happened to her to her parents, her father,  Krishen Kumar, committed suicide.  The rapists are not just from the upper caste, but also wealthy and politically well connected, and the police has not acted on the complaint filed by the family.  A member of an NGO working for Dalit rights said, “Most men in the Haryana police force are Jats. There is very little chance of fair investigation in the cases of atrocities against Dalits.”  The relatives of the accused actually visited the victim’s house, to tell the family to settle the case out of court.  The family was accused of destroying the village’s “intercaste harmony” after they refused to go in for an out-of-court settlement.  Dalit victims often cannot even get legal help.  Shreeji Bhavsar, a  Supreme Court lawyer explains why lawyers hesitate to represent Dalit victims in court.  “Even if someone does, his colleagues (in the courts) and society will brand him.  After the incident, the police launched a witch-hunt against my colleague, Rajat Kalsan (who had represented Dalit victims in courts.)  His office was raided and he and his father were beaten up in the court premises.”

As a Dalit village elder points out, “We are always at the receiving end of such atrocities.”  There are 600 such police cases still pending just in this one state alone! Full report here

It seems there’s a caste issue in India. I don’t mean to be disrespectful towards India religion or beliefs, but it sounds like an excuse to discrimination. We have our castes here in Brazil: black, indians, poor, women, gays… It all works the same way, the difference is in India, it’s rawer. We have to change the culture. There’s no way we’ll get to end this violence unless we change the way people think. These men actually believe they have the right to do that. They must be punished. All the prisional system has to be changed.

Absolutely. The caste system is a system of social hierarchy the way color is a means of social hierarchy in western societies. If one can condemn race based violence why shouldn’t we globally condemn caste based violence?

Unlike in America, India has 2 types of rapes. Class based and Caste based rapes.
Are these r a pists living in better conditions than in jail?
If yes, then confiscate 80% of r a pist/his family wealth and give it to the victim for her rehabilitation. e.g. Dabra gang r a pe victim.
If no, then take your Caste share of land as per Communal_Award and go build your own nation. Otherwise your future generations will regret. e.g. Delhi gang r a pe victim.
