Another Dowry Murder Staged as Suicide?

November 17, 2012

New Delhi, November 13, 2012

24-year-old interior designer, Payal Batra’s death has all the markings of dowry murders in middle and upper class homes in India, which are often staged as “suicides” by hanging.  The case is under police investigation.

Payal Batra’s husband and in-laws claimed that Payal hung herself using her shawl.  However according to a statement given by Payal’s father, Naresh Batra, his daughter had been harassed and abused for dowry ever since she got married to Gaurav last February.  He said, “Ever since her marriage took place, her in-laws as well as Gaurav had been harassing her for dowry. Three times she returned home unable to withstand the mental torture. Last month, she came here and stayed for 15 days before Gaurav arrived to take her home. She even bought expensive electronic items on Sunday morning to please her relatives at Dhanteras (Diwali). Yet she was harassed so much that she ended up dead the next morning.”  Full report here

    Thank you for bringing this information to light. Although I knew that the culture of dowry payments by the family of brides is extremely harmeful to women, I really had no idea that such an epidemic of bride murder was taking place in India. What can be done? What steps should be taken to ensure this horrible practice comes to an end. I have heard that paying dowry is now illegal in India (is that right) but so long as the law is ignored, women remain in great danger. The government must start giving the harshest punishments to husbands & in-laws who murder these innocent women all in the desire of wanting more and more money!

      Jean Sasson — The law has to be implemented and it is blatantly ignored. So everyone thinks, I can get rich through dowry and the police does not act against mass murder anyway! In fact there are many cases where the police themselves take dowry and kill their wives for dowry!

    let the court decision come -its not a dowry death-आज कल औरत से एक कप चाय जबरदस्ती नहीं बनबा सकते दहेज़ तो दूर की बात है-बगैर सच्चाई जाने , बदले की भावना से बनाया गया यह पेज न केवल समाज को तोड़ेगा बल्कि महिलाओं का पक्ष भी कमजोर करेगा

      Oh? I’d love to know then if it was not a dowry death, do you think it was a simple suicide??? From what her father says, it seems she was horribly harrassed about more dowry. So, will be interesting what is discovered, I agree with you on that.

      Jean — They have arrested the husband but not the in-laws. Usually most dowry cases the violence is in a “gang” form, which we’ve repeatedly argued. But usually in upper middle and upper class families unless the family individually pushes and fights for the cases, very rarely is justice done. Even if the men are arrested, they are released in a couple of months. See the case we’ve been supporting Anshu Singh’s case. And see here what the family has to endure in court.
