Female Politician and her Baby Girl are Victims of Dowry Violence
New Delhi, Nov 09, 2012
Satyam Yadav, a 26-year-old, University educated, woman councilor for the ruling Congress Party, who had won the municipal elections for her party in the nation’s capitol, was found hanging from a ceiling fan in her house. She is said to have committed suicide because she couldn’t take the persistent abuse from her husband and in-laws for more and more dowry. They had demanded Rs 10 lakh (U.S. $20,000/- and a Honda City car) from Satyam’s family, which they said they could not give. Satyam is also said to have strangled her 1 and 1/2 year old baby girl, before she died. Many young, professional working women in India, when faced with extreme dowry harassment and abuse, often commit suicide which socially is usually seen as preferable to divorce for a woman.
The police however is still investigating the case, and has not ruled out the involvement of a “third party,” meaning they suspect is could be a double-murder staged as suicide and homocide by Satyam. Most dowry related murders are staged as suicides or accidents. Full report here
