Brother Murder’s Sister for “Honor” ; Takes her Head to the Police

Mehtab Alam after he walked into the police station with his sister’s head

08 December, 2012, Kolkata

How many women in India, who’ve managed to get out of their abusive violent marriages, and want to start a new life with another partner, are actually able to do so?

The fact is: that while it is socially acceptable, even recommended, that men divorced or widowed can remarry, women who desire to do so, are socially stigmatized, abused, and sometimes as in the case of 29-year-old Nilofar, last week, murdered by their family who believe that a divorced daughter who wants to remarry brings “dishonor” to their family.

Nilofar, was a child bride.  She had been married off by her family to a man in another village when she was 14-years-old.   She bore two children, and for 15 years suffered violence and abuse by her in-laws.  Finally she found the courage to leave and return to her parents house with her children.   One of the things that gave her courage to leave was that she had met a man she had fallen in love with, and believed she could have a fresh start in life.

After returning to her parents house, she secretly went to meet her lover.  When her brother, Mehtab Alam found out, he went to the house of the man Nilofar wanted to be with, dragged his sister out on to the street, and with the town watching on, he beheaded her publicly.  Alam also attacked the sister of the lover, when she tried to protect Nilofar, and he severed her arm too with the sword.  He then walked into the local police station with his sister’s head in his hands, and confessed to murdering her for “honor.”  Full report here.

So savage….what kind of hate exists in this man’s heart for women. Her own brother added to her suffering….WHY? These type of men are lacking Empathy, compassion & respect for life. There is more to this than just cultural beliefs. If you truly love something you do everything in your power to keep it safe…just ask any mother protecting her child from danger.

It just makes me think that the men in India are born and are quickly taught that women aren’t people. They are just tools and toys to be used and thrown away. This man cared so little for his own sister. His own honor is more important than her life? This was a “selfish” killing, because “honor” had nothing to do with it.
