Don’t Kill the Bride! On-line Photo Exhibition
It is the wedding season in India and there are millions of Indian women decking up in beautiful, traditional, bridal costumes, and partaking in long, colorful wedding ceremonies with dreams of a long and happy married life!
So in celebration of their dreams and hopes, we bring you here an online photo-exhibition of the brides of India created from the photo contributions of the
2400 photographers worldwide who support The 50 Million Missing Campaign’s photo pool on flickr.
However, the purpose of this on-line exhibition is to also remind you of the other, not-so-pretty side of Indian weddings. Every year there are thousands of newly married women who are blackmailed, abusedbrutally tortured and often killed for dowry! It is estimated that 1 woman is murdered every 5 minutes. We Have Two Requests For You:
1) PLEASE DO NOT PAY DOWRY AND DO NOT MARRY INTO A FAMILY THAT MAKES ANY KINDS OF DOWRY DEMANDS.
2)IT IS NOT ENOUGH TO PLAY ‘ANGRY BRIDES’ ON FACEBOOK TO SHOW YOUR OPPOSITION. INSTEAD, IF YOU HAVE A FAMILY OR RELATIVE DEMANDING OR GIVING DOWRY, SPEAK UP. DON’T ATTEND WEDDINGS WHERE DOWRIES ARE GIVEN OR TAKEN. AND LET YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY OPENLY KNOW THAT YOU WILL NOT SUPPORT THIS CUSTOM IN YOUR PERSONAL CIRCLE!
