Voice of The Campaign at Goldsmiths University, London

March 29, 2011

Melissa Smith, the official Voice of The 50 Million Missing Campaign for the London (U.K.) area, has done it again! She gave another successful presentation at the Goldsmiths University in London.

She says:

The talk went really well. It was a smallish group… but they were all really interested and engaged with the subject. And SHOCKED that this goes on! Their tutor said they were full of questions about it all afternoon, so I hope they went onto the site to look it up. The greatest challenge I faced was not to ‘otherise’ India and Indians – many were saying things like ‘why do they do that?’ ‘why is that allowed to happen?’.  I touched on local examples of women’s sangham’s using traditional culture to celebrate the births of girls, and also on how Western culture sexualises young girls and women to the point of death (huge rises in anorexia and body dysmorphia etc.). Anyway, all in all another success.

Thank you again to Melissa! The campaign counts much on volunteers like her who generously donate their time and energy to raise public awareness and lobby for change.
